About

Once upon a time, way back in the day, publisher names meant something. They told you what kind of story to expect. Racy, futuristic, epic…

And then the ebook revolution happened.

Now, nobody cares what publisher publishes a book, unless you’re one of those weirdos who only reads committee-granted literary awards (if that’s you, why are you reading this????).

Originally, our founder chose our name because, why not? Nobody would care. So she named us Abyssinian Books after her mother’s cats (red/orange Abyssinians).

When she started developing systems, procedures, company culture, she realized that her mom’s cats had the perfect personality to inspire our publishing company:

  • Curiosity about new things
  • Relaxing (basking) in their favorite warm cozy places
  • PRS (processes, recipes, systems)
  • Loving comfortable repeated routine
  • Loving new and exciting developments

So those things define how we operate as a publisher and the kinds of stories we publish.

The juxtaposition of tradition and innovation as explored through stories in many genres prepare us to confront our future with grace and competence.

When we read a story or listen to it, our brains create the same electrical patterns that the person who experienced that scenario did. Thus every story we read or listen to adds to our own experience. It allows us to make better decisions, be more compassionate, more resourceful. Stories give us “booster points” for life: the time it takes to read or listen to a story is significantly less than experiencing something equivalent in person. We can read and read and read, in our five-minute breaks, in the hour before bedtime, while we wait for the bus. And every minute we read, we level up our skills and decision-making abilities which makes us more valuable in the workplace, better parents, better friends, better colleagues.

Those stories, the ones that inspire us, that we read over and over and over because we learn something new every time, those stories are the stories that we represent.

Sometimes those stories are lighthearted romance. Sometimes they’re the #MeToo Anthologies. Sometimes they’re fantasy or sci-fi.

We encourage you to read outside your genre preferences. To push your boundaries. Because it is only when you stretch the limits of your comfort zone that you grow and learn and become a better version of yourself.
